Energy Management Systems

Energy management systems (EMS) are designed to produce whole building energy efficiency through a building automation system (BAS). A BAS is a computer-based system that monitors the building’s mechanical and electrical equipment, including, but not limited to, lighting, power, fire, and security systems.

Building management systems are typically recommended for larger buildings or campus-style facilities that have complex HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems. Newer technology, however, allows smaller buildings to enjoy the benefits of BMS. BMS present some of the most comprehensive energy efficiency solutions to maximize savings by monitoring and controlling building systems and system components throughout an entire facility. Building management systems attempt to reduce costs through the following measures:

Occupancy

  • Time/calendar scheduling, including holiday/vacation periods
  • Zoning
  • Optimizers
  • Frost protection
  • Overrides
  • Allowable temperature bands
  • Compensation
  • Outside high limit
  • Disabling humidification
  • Control stability
  • Air handling systems and damper economy overrides

Electricity Savings

  • Load cycling
  • Demand programming
  • Night purge/summer pre-cooling
  • Variable speed drives
  • Maximum demand

Intelligent Design

  • Energy monitoring, profiling, and modeling
  • Energy aggregation

Prism Energy Services supports comprehensive building efficiency by installing customized controls and metering, including:

  • Thermostat-controlled energy management systems for the hospitality industry
  • Sensor-based RTU control solutions for large commercial buildings
  • Wireless energy management technologies for the hospitality and higher education industries
  • PLC controls for processes

Energy management systems are designed for customers who want to develop full control of their building’s energy performance. By monitoring and analyzing how a building consumes energy, adjustments can be made to optimize performance. Customers that can benefit from an energy management system include:
