NATURAL GAS MEASURES

Natural gas measures refer to anything that can save energy in the form of natural gas. Prism installs pipe insulation, duct sealing and insulation, and boiler reset controls. We also install programmable thermostats, which can save a combination of electricity and gas, depending on your heating fuel. Additionally, Prism installs water conservation measures, including pre-rinse spray valves, faucet aerators, and low-flow showerheads, which can save a combination of electricity, gas, or water, depending on the building’s water heating system.

Pipe insulation

Applying insulation to hot water pipes reduces heat loss and can raise water temperatures. This allows the water temperature settings to be lowered by approximately 4°F, which can save about 2% on annual energy bills. Applying insulation is a relatively inexpensive operation with a typical payback between 3-6 months.

Duct sealing and insulation

Duct sealing can prevent hot air in the winter and cold air in the summer from escaping a building. The more air that escapes the building envelope or duct system, the more the HVAC will have to work. A well-sealed building envelope will improve energy efficiency by keeping a building at the desired temperature for longer without straining the HVAC system. Duct sealing and insulation can save up to 20% on annual energy bills with a typical payback of less than 2 years.

Boiler reset controls

Boiler reset controls are algorithm-based devices that are designed to improve hot water heating system performance by regulating a boiler’s water supply temperature levels automatically, based on the outside air temperature. The colder the outside air, for example, the higher the water temperature levels are raised. For every varying degree in outside temperature change, automatic adjustments are made, preventing temperature variation influxes. Boiler reset controls, on average, have a payback between 1 and 3 years with annual savings up to 10%.

Businesses that qualify are those with hot water and/or steam boilers that use more than 30,000 therms per year. Facilities that benefit the most from boiler reset controls include:

Programmable thermostats

Programmable thermostats can adjust temperatures automatically based on pre-set setpoints and time schedules. A programmable thermostat can be set to heat or cool based on time of day, temperature level, or both. They improve ease of use and comfort levels as well as reducing the frequency with which the heating and/or cooling is left running while a facility is unoccupied.
